Article 370
The first general elections in J&K were held in 1952 and the elected
assembly constituted itself as a Constituent Assembly. Meanwhile, the Indian
Constitution vide Article 370 had granted a special status to the state
guaranteeing it autonomy except for defence, foreign affairs and communications.
The Constituent Assembly formulated the constitution of the state which
was formally adopted on 26 November 1956. The assembly also formally ratified
the state's accession to India.
