Militants Flee Cordon, Again, In Hajin26 February 2018
Haijin: For the second time in the past five days, militants managed to flee an army and police cordon in Hajin area of Bandipora district, amid massive street protests, on Monday. The army's 13RR unit and the police's special operations group had cordoned off Bon Mohalla locality in the wee hours after inputs of 'unknown' number of militants in the area, sources said. When the cordon was being tightened around a specific area, militants came out in the open and fired at the troops, triggering an exchange of gunfire for at least 10 minutes, during which they managed to make their way out of the cordon. The cordon, which was launched at 5am in the morning, remained intact for 5 hours. It was the second such encounter in the past five days in Hajin, after a lull of nearly 3 months when six foreign militants were killed in November. When the cordon was being laid, massive protests erupted against the operation with scores of youths throwing stones at the government forces. The government forces lobbed teargas shells at the youths, resulting in an injury to one youth who was later treated at a Hajin hospital. Police officials told Kashmir Reader that they recovered an AK47 Magazine, 8 live bullets, and 13 empty cartridges from near the cordon site.
