Srinagar: A militant was killed and two soldiers were injured when the Army foiled an infiltration bid in frontier Kupwara district today. The infiltration attempt was foiled by the Army at Routa Nar in the Keran sector of Kupwara when it spotted a group of militants moving towards the Line of Control (LoC) from across at midnight. 'The firefight broke out when the infiltrators were challenged by troops. They were effectively engaged by soldiers and in the gunfight, one terrorist was killed and two jawans were injured,' a defence source said. 'The intermittent firing in the sector continued through Thursday,' the source said. The operation in the sector is underway. Sources said, of late, major infiltration attempts were being made through Kupwara and it was turning into a key sector for militants to sneak in. There have been reports that militants have managed to successfully sneak into the Valley from across in the past two months despite most of the passes along the LoC being blocked by snow. The three fidayeen militants, who carried out a deadly attack in Pampore on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway last month, are believed to have infiltrated recently. The police investigation suggests that the three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants had reached the Valley some 12 days before the Pampore attack, which left five security men, including three Army commandos, dead. The Army said it was investigating whether any militant had managed to infiltrate into the Valley in the past month. In 2015, defence sources had said over 100 infiltration attempts were made by militants. Of these, over two dozen militants had managed to enter into the Kashmir valley, they added.
