Srinagar: As another locally-trained militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) was killed on Saturday in the ongoing operations by security forces in Kashmir, year 2016 has started on a challenging note with 10 militants, mainly home-grown and locally trained, already dead. In the third encounter that erupted in south Kashmir this year, young Raqib Bashir, a resident of Pulwama's Zoodur, was killed at Gundepur village late Saturday afternoon. Sources said Bashir had joined the militant ranks of the HM in November last year. 'The HM militant tried to break the cordon by exploding a grenade when he was trapped in a house. However, the security forces engaged him in a gun fight. After the exchange of fire for some time, he was gunned down,' said a police official, on the condition of anonymity. According to the sources, Bashir was among four other local militants killed this year. Four out of 10 militants killed in the past 36 days in six operations, according to the police records, 'never crossed the border or the Line of Control (LoC) into Pakistan or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for arms training'. Only three militants killed in Kupwara on January 30 were identified as non-Kashmiris, the identity of three more killed in Bandipora, two days ago, remains unascertained. In a throwback to the 1990s, peoples' participation in militant funerals has shown an upward trend.
