'Will Hand You Over To Lashkar': Kashmir Legislator Engineer Rashid Triggers Row

21 January 2016

Srinagar: No stranger to controversies, independent Jammu and Kashmir legislator Engineer Rashid sparked a fresh row on Wednesday after he was seen in a video clip telling somebody that he will 'hand him over' to the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba tonight. According to the local BJP unit, Mr Rashid and his supporters who were sitting on a protest in Pulwama, about 40 km from Srinagar, got into a scuffle with some supporters of the party. Someone among BJP supporters allegedly called Mr Rashid a terrorist and he retorted to the allegation, saying he will hand him over to the Lashkar. In the video clip, however, it is unclear who the apparent threat is addressed to. The BJP has demanded police action against Engineer Rashid over the incident. Holding signs against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Engineer Rashid and his supporters from the Awami Ittehad Party or AIP organised a sit-in in front of Deputy Commissioner's Office in Pulwama against the death a man in clashes with security forces in the district yesterday. In October last year Engineer Rashid had been attacked by BJP legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for hosting a beef party in the state protesting against the beef ban in the state.
