Solider Killed In Ongoing Encounter In Kashmir

Srinagar: A soldier was killed in an ongoing gun battle with militants in a forest area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Wednesday evening. Sources said troops of the Army's 14-Rashtriya Rifles, commandos of 7-PARA and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon-and-search operation in forest area of Bhutoo, 65 km from here, on Wednesday morning. Earlier, on Tuesday evening, security forces had launched an operation at Slynder forest area of Shok Baba village in Summlar of the district to track down the militants hiding inside the forest area. The security forces, according to sources, fired few warning shots towards the suspected spot and the militants present in the area opened heavy fire upon the search party triggering a fierce gun battle.During the initial gunfight, a soldier identified as rifleman Suboth sustained bullet wounds, report said. He and was evacuated to Army's 92 Base Hospital here where he succumbed. Sources said that the Army has also pressed choppers into service and sealed all exit routes in the forest area. 'There are inputs that five to six heavily armed militants are hiding in the forest area who had recently sneaked into Kashmir through Gurez sector after crossing the LoC,' they said adding the police had also inputs that Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Abu Qasim could be in the area as he had come to receive the fresh group.
