Three Soldiers Injured In Baramulla Gunfight

Srinagar: A militant was killed and three soldiers were injured in a gunfight in north Kashmir on Wednesday. A civilian sustained grievous injuries in street protests in south Kashmir, which is on the boil for third consecutive day over a trucker's death. A Srinagar-based Army spokesman said the militant was killed at Bongam village of Baramulla district, 30 km away from Srinagar. 'As an operation was on to track down terrorists, a fierce gun battle began in a residential area, which continued intermittently through the day,' said the spokesman. He said that so far, one heavily-armed terrorist of Hizbul Mujahideen was killed. He was identified as Nisar Wani, a resident of Atipura, Kunzar. Huge quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered, he added. Three soldiers sustained injuries and were shifted to 92 Base Hospital. Sources said the slain militant was a top-rank militant commander. Meanwhile, the death of a trucker, Zahoor Bhat, kept south Kashmir on the boil for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. There were sporadic violent protests in parts of south Kashmir, including Anantnag and Bijbehara.
