Srinagar: A suspected militant was killed in an ongoing firefight in north Kashmir's frontier Kupwara district. The Army said that the gunfight erupted on Saturday evening when troops were carrying searches in Waderbala-Handwara forests, 100 kms from here. 'In the gunfight so far one militant has been killed and his body has been recovered,' an Army spokesman said. The operation in the area is continuing. The Army had intercepted a group of militants in the area on Saturday morning and there was a brief exchange of fire. However, militants escaped from the spot. The troops, sources said, continued searches in the area and another contact with the militants was established at around 5 pm and the intermittent exchange of fire continued throughout the night. Sources said that the group of militants engaged in a firefight had infiltrated recently and were holed up in the Waderbala forest area. The encounter site is near to the dense Hafruda forest, which on October 5 witnessed a gunfight, which left four jawans of an Army elite counter insurgency unit Rashtriya Rifles dead.
