Srinagar: Two firefights - one close to the Line of Control (LoC) and another in the upper reaches of Rafiabad - are underway in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. A militant was killed in the gunfight close to the LoC in the Uri sector this morning. Sources said he was part of a group of four to six militants, believed to have infiltrated through the Uri sector recently. They were spotted near the Lachipora forests, some 90 km from Srinagar, two day ago. After the group was spotted, the Army, Special Forces and the Special Operations Group of the J&K Police launched a massive search operation to trace the heavily armed militants. The security forces cordoned a large portion of the forest area, but could not establish contact with the militants in the past two days. The militant group was finally traced this morning. 'The firefight erupted around 7 am today when a group of militants was challenged by troops in Kazinag Lachilpora in the Uri sector. The firefight is underway and one militant has been killed so far,' an Army spokesman said. 'His identity is yet to be ascertained,' the spokesman added. The police suspect that the militants engaged in the gunfight at Lachipora had crossed over recently. While the Uri operation was on, another gunfight erupted in the Vij forests of Rafiabad in Baramulla district, nearly 80 km from Srinagar. There are apprehensions that the militants in Lachipora might have escaped from the area, taking the advantage of the dense forest, but were intercepted in the Vij forests of Rafiabad. 'The encounter is on in the Vij forest as we suspect three or four militants are holed up,' said a police officer in north Kashmir.
