South Kashmir On Flood Alert; Heavy Rains Continue

Srinagar: A flood alert was declared for Anantnag and Pulwama districts in south Kashmir after heavy rains on Wednesday. River Jhelum had reached levels close to the danger mark at Sangam. 'Flood alert has been declared for Anatnag and Pulwama districts as river Jhelum is flowing at 22 feet at Sangam, one feet below the danger mark,' Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Javed Jaffer told PTI. People living in and around flood prone areas in these districts have been advised to shift to safer areas. A website Rising Kashmir reported that, a number of roads were inundated in Srinagar affecting vehicular and pedestrian movement following relentless rainfall. Several areas including marketplaces- Lal Chowk, Residency Road, Regal Chowk and Hari Singh High Street witnessed waterlogging hampering vehicular movement. People have taken to Twitter in expressing their disappointment in the government's inability to take more concrete action that would help stablise life in the flood prone areas. According to unconfirmed reports, some bridges have also been washed away by Vaishaw Nallah. The water level in Jhelum and its tributaries rose sharply following heavy rainfall since early today. The weatherman has forecast more rains over the next 48 hours in Kashmir.
