Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Sunday said the civilian killings in Sopore in the recent past appear to be a ploy to create a 'threat perception among the pro-freedom people' of Kashmir. 'We condemn the innocent killings in Sopore. It seems to be a ploy to kill freedom loving people in order to create a threat perception among others,' Mirwaiz said on the sidelines of a function here. He also referred to Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar's controversial remarks wherein he had hinted at a covert operation 'to neutralise terrorists through terrorists only'. Mirwaiz said the killings started after Parrikar made the statement. 'In spite of the fact that government is claiming to have taken all precautionary measures the killings continue to take place. We can't say who is doing it but the statement of Indian defense minister can't be taken lightly,' he said, adding that government has to clarify as to why these killings are taking place. Mirwaiz said pro-freedom leadership should think and formulate a strategy to tackle the 'grave situation'. 'Killing innocent people is not acceptable. We must take stock of the situation as to why innocent people are being targeted for no apparent reason,' he said. Unidentified gunmen killed another civilian Mehrajuddin Dar near his shop at Badam Bagh Sopore on Sunday taking the toll of serial killings in the region to five.
