Police Up In Arms Against Virtual Activists

Srinagar: Cracking its whip on false and frivolous information related to internal security situation of the state being circulated through social networking site 'Facebook', Jammu and Kashmir Police today registered cases against unnamed people who were running 13 such pages on the web portal. Ever since Ashok Prasad took over as the Director General of state police, a special focus was on identifying people who had created these pages on the social networking site and those responsible for circulation of rumors. Both Crime Branch and CID departments were asked to track such people besides taking up the matter with Facebook officials based in India. Facebook officials assured all help in case a case was registered, official sources said. A statement issued by the state police today said some mischievous elements have been posting incorrect, frivolous and fake information on social networking sites particularly Facebook. Police have found the following Facebook pages indulging in posting such baseless information which included Kashmir News Agency, Loving Kashmir, Youths of Downtown-Kashmir, 24X7 Breaking News, All (J&K) Breaking News Alert, True Muhajid Voice of Kashmir Youth, Youths of Down Town and Voice of Unspoken Kashmir, the statement said. A case has been registered case against these Facebook pages and the persons running these pages are being identified. 'Action has been initiated against the page Admins who have been found copying and pasting wrong information of the above pages,' it said. 'The Face book pages indulging in posting such baseless information have been identified as Kashmir News Agency, Loving Kashmir, Youths of Downtown-Kashmir, 24X7 Breaking News, Kashmir Banega Pakistan, Pahallan the city of Hurriyat G, Ganderbal News Agency, All (J&K) Breaking News Alert, True Muhajid, Election Boycott Bandipora, Voice of Kashmir Youth, Youths of Down Town and Voice of Unspoken Kashmir,' the spokesman said. He said that police have registered cases against these Face book pages and the persons running these pages are being identified. He further said that action has been initiated against the page Admins who have been found copying and pasting wrong information of the above pages. Meanwhile, a senior police official said that more face book pages are under surveillance and action as per law will be taken if they are found violating norms. He said the drive against such 'rumor mongers' will continue and asked people to remain cautious against such miscreants spreading false information over Facebook and other medium in the valley.
