Srinagar: Both separatist and mainstream leaders today termed the hanging of Afzal Guru as unjustified, saying Guru was not offered opportunity of fair trial and his death sentence was carried out for political reasons.Reacting to today’s SC verdict, Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani said it is an eye opener for all Kashmiris and it has vindicated their stand that Kashmiris can’t expect justice from India. Criticizing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Geelani said that not only are innocent Kashmiri people made to languish in jails but the movement of pro-freedom leaders is also restricted to muzzle their voice. “Can Omar Abdullah tell me why he is restricting the movement of pro-freedom leaders and why he is employing his State machinery to place us under house arrest if he claims that the prevailing peaceful situation in the State is not deceptive,” he said. JKLF Chairman Muhammad Yaseen Malik said that mainstream politicians in Jammu and Kashmir have been responsible for atrocities on people. “Unlike the politicians of Punjab and Tamil Nadu who protested against New Delhi’s decision to hang their convicts, politicians of Jammu and Kashmir have been responsible for atrocities on people here.” Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the decision to commute death sentence of Rajiv killers only reiterates their stand that Afzal Guru’s execution was carried out in violation of India’s own laws. “This has shown that New Delhi has been retributive towards the people of Kashmir. Guru was not given chance for fair trial. While India violated principles of justice and fair play in his case, it has been soft on Rajiv killers,” he said. Democratic Freedom Party chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah said hanging of Afzal Guru was carried out for political reasons. “Not only was law violated in hanging Guru, even on his death anniversary people of Kashmir were caged and an atmosphere of fear was created. On the day people were forced to stay indoors under strict curfew.” National Front Chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan said in case of Afzal Guru the family was not even allowed to see him before sending him to gallows. “His family members were not even informed about it and the execution was carried out in a secret manner. New Delhi has been vindictive towards people of Kashmir,” he said. People’s Democratic Front (PDF) Chairman Hakeem Yaseen said in the execution of Afzal Guru the sensitivities of Kashmiris were ignored. “The SC verdict shows that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been discriminated against. The verdict will only strengthen the alienation among the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Liberation Party (DLP), Hashim Qureshi, said that while Guru was hanged to “satisfy the collective conscience of the Indian nation,” the Rajiv Gandhi killers were given fair opportunity to defend themselves. Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone said that Afzal Guru’s case was a “grave miscarriage of justice.” “The current MLAs of Jammu and Kashmir have collectively failed the people of the State,” he said. Senior National Conference (NC) leader Mustafa Kamal said the execution of Afzal Guru was done on circumstantial evidence. “Guru was not even present at the spot at the time of incident. If Guru wouldn’t have been Muslim, he would have got fair trial,” he said. “There have been two yard-sticks in dealing with Jammu and Kashmir and other States of India,” he said. CPI (M) MLA, Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami said he has been against capital punishment. “In executing Afzal Guru the sensitivities of the people of Jammu and Kashmir were not taken into consideration.” Independent MLA from Langate and President of Awami Itihaad Party, Engineer Rasheed said the Supreme Court has shown that legislators of Jammu and Kashmir have failed in their duties. Protesting over the issue in the legislative assembly today, Rashid said the sentence has exposed the duplicity of Indian mindset. “Justice has again not been done to the people of Kashmir,” he said. “The current government has played an active part in getting Guru executed. It is unfortunate that the family members of Guru have not been provided even the mortal remains,” Rasheed said. He said Guru was hanged to satisfy the collective conscience of India and the verdict has exposed that New Delhi adopts two yard-sticks for Kashmir and other States.
