Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Liberation Party Thursday celebrated Maqbool Day at party head quarters located in Raj Bagh. Besides party workers, a number of civil society members and other prominent citizens and politicians were present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, JKDLP Chairman, Hashim Qureshi while paying rich tributes to Shaheed Muhammad Maqbool Bhat said that he was a great leader who laid his precious life for the Kashmir cause. “Maqbool Bhat was an epitome of Kashmir struggle and he was the first to raise his voice against Indian occupation. His slogan and principles were followed by Kashmiri people after his martyrdom and today we have realized the essence of his leadership qualities which he possessed,” Hashim Qureshi said. He said that Maqbool was his mentor and friend who guided him through thick and thin of life. He said that, “it is unfortunate that Kashmiri intellectuals and intelligentsia are no part of our Movement and they have kept themselves aloof from this Freedom struggle. Uncertainty in Kashmiri leadership is evident as no intellectual is associated with any separatist groups,” he said. He said that the slogan of ‘independent Kashmir’ has become popular and now people are associating with this slogan without any second thought which was not the case some few decades ago. “It is history that anyone who raised Independent Kashmir slogan was described either Indian agent or ‘Kafir’, he said adding that we have sacrificed our four generations from last 65 years and if we don’t get united at this juncture then we are bound to suffer in future as we used to suffer at present. Appealing Separatist leaders to shun the thought of ‘accession with Pakistan’, DLP chairman Hashim Qureshi said that India has let loose a reign of terror in Kashmir by slapping draconian black laws. Terming UN resolutions on Kashmir as irrelevant, Quereshi said that these resolutions don’t mention independence of Kashmir but urge people of Kashmir either to opt of India or Pakistan. Pressing for the return of mortal remains of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat and Muhammad Afzal Guroo, DLP Chairman said that there will a day when people of Kashmir will witness the light of freedom. He condemned the random arrests of youth on the eve of death anniversaries of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat and Muhammad Afzal Guroo.
