Srinagar: Welcoming the Court Martial of six army men including two officers for killing three youth in a fake encounter in Machil, the families of the victims have demanded exemplary punishment to the guilty. “This is a welcome step,” Ghulam Ahmad Khan, father of a slain youth Shahzad Ahmad, told Greater Kashmir. “They have killed our son. We want the culprits to be hanged,” he said. Khan, speaking on behalf of the three victim families, pledged that they would leave no stone unturned till the culprits are given severe punishment. “We used to go to Anderhama Drugmulla to record our statements before the inquiry officer. The inquiry officer and his team gave us a patient hearing,” he said. “The people who proved that our sons were killed in a fake encounter also have children and will hopefully recommend severe punishment to the guilty,” he added. Khan said they were left disappointed by the State Government. “Soon after the expose, the Government promised us Rs 5 lakhs and job, but till this day we did not get that,” he said, but added that they would be satisfied only when the guilty army men are punished. Shahzad Ahmad Khan, Riyaz Ahmad Lone and Muhammad Shafi Lone of Nadihal Baramulla were killed in a staged encounter by soldiers of 4 Rajput Regiment on the LoC in April 2010. The youth were then passed off by the soldiers as infiltrating militants for getting rewards and promotions. After investigations, police charge-sheeted a Colonel and two Majors among 11 people in connection with the fake encounter. The accused were Col D K Pathania, Major Maurya, Major Upinder, Subedar Satbir, Hawaldar Bir Singh, Sepoys Chandra Bhan, Nagendra Singh and Narendra Singh and Abbas Hussain Shah of the Territorial Army (TA) besides two civilians Basharat Lone and Abdul Hamid Bhat.
