March To UN Office Foiled, Geelani Detained

Srinagar: Police on Wednesday foiled the march to the Srinagar office of the United Nations Observer Group called by Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Police took Geelani into 'preventive custody' and used force to quell the protesters at different places. Police detained Gilani when he tried to break the cordon at his Hyderpora residence. Geelani was later lodged at Humhama police station. According to Inspector Genreal of police termed detention of Geelani a preventive measure. “The overall situation remained normal. We took him into preventive custody,” he said. Pertinently Geelani had called on people to assemble at his residence and later march towards the the UNMOGIP office at Sonawar in Srinagar to lodge protest against civilian killings in Shopian. Police however had created barricades at several places in Hyderpora and Sonwar. The force resorted to tear gas shelling when people tried to march towards Geelani's residence from Channe Mohalla and Peer Bagh on Airport road. Police and paramilitary CRPF personnel, deployed there, resorted to baton charge and fired tear smoke shells to disperse the groups. Eye witness said “Large number of police and CRPF personnel had cordoned the area around Geelani’s residence on Wednesday morning. Police and paramilitary had cordoned the whole area and nobody was allowed to move towards Geelani’s residence, “they said. The roads leading to the UN office was also sealed by the police and traffic was diverted through other routes. Meanwhile Bar Association held a protest march in Lalchock and tried to march towards UN office but police intercepted them and did not allow them to move forward. Police used force to disperse the lawyers. Meanwhile APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai and Nayeem Ahmad Khan were placed under house arrest. The police also arrested Democratic Political Moment (DPM) Chairman, Firdous Ahmad Shah during a nocturnal raid. They also raided the houses of Pir Saifullah, Ayyaz Akbar and Dr Ghulam Muhammad Ganai to prevent them from participating in the march, a Hurriyat (G) spokesman said.
