PL Leader Dies Mysteriously

Srinagar: Protests were held in Baramulla district against the mysterious death of a Peoples League (PL) leader Abdul Rashid Sofi alias Abul Rasheed Gazi whose body was found at Kandi Baramulla. Police said initial investigations has revealed that it is a ‘hit and run’ case. His family members said Sofi 65, a resident of Kakarhamam had left his home on Wednesday night and did not return. “We were shocked to hear that his body was found in Nopora, Kreeri. His body had burn injuries and it seems he has died of physical torture,” one of the family members said. He said Abdul Rashid had head, arm and back injuries. Protests erupted in his native village and Azad Ganj, Cement Bridge and Khanpora Bridge of Baramulla and the protestors pelted stones on police and para-military troopers. Eyewitnesses said that police and paramilitary forces fired gunshots in the air to disperse the protestors. Heavy tear gas shelling and firing in air created panic in the area. Deputy Inspector General of police, Baramula, J.P.Singh told media that the deceased was a senior Hurriyat member and police found his dead body with injuries on his head and back. “We have conducted his post-mortem and it seems he has died in a road accident,” Singh said adding that situation in town is under control. Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla, Zubair Ahmed Khan said police has started inquiry under section 174 and if need arises a murder case may be registered. “We have constituted an investigating team headed by SDPO, Syed Fayaz which would investigate the matter,” Khan said adding that initial reports suggest that it is a hit and run case. Meanwhile, a police handout said, “Body of Abdul Rashid Sofi son of Mohammad Ashkoor Sofi resident of Kakerhamam Baramulla was found lying on road side at Nowpora Kreeri in the jurisdiction of police station Kreeri Baramulla. The police shifted the body to the hospital where post mortem was conducted. One mark of injury has been found on the head. According to initial investigations the circumstantial evidences on the spot suggests that it is a hit and run road accidental case. However, police has taken cognizance.” Meanwhile, People’s League chairman Mukhtar Ahmad Waza expressed shock over the ‘killing’ of party leader Abdul Rashid Gazi. He termed it barbaric and said that he was killed under a conspiracy. Quoting reports a local news agency, CNS, said Sofi was a senior separatist leader and before joining Peoples League. He had gone to PAK in early 90s and was arrested in 1991. He was a militant commander of Al-Jihad outfit at that time.
