Srinagar: Army Monday made a U-turn and claimed that its men did not kill Irfan Nabi Ganaie at Markundal, Bandipora on Sunday. “We do not know, who fired on Irfan, leading to his death. I reached myself on the spot and checked the ammunition of my men and found that not a single bullet was fired by my men,” Brigadier 3 Sector Rashtriya Rifles, Brij Gopal Sharma told reporters at Mansbal today. He said men of 13 RR and SoG personnel had laid a siege of Markundal area after receiving information that militants were present in the village. “Irfan lost his life when he came out from his house but we don’t know who fired on him. At least Army men did not kill him”. He said Army cordons any area after receiving inputs about the presence of militants. “Our job is not to harass people. We are people friendly and a disciplined force,” Sharma said. He, however, admitted that another youth Tariq was killed in Army firing. “We were helpless at that time. The protestors had snatched keys of our vehicles and damaged one of the ambulances (A02K007215Y) completely. Our men fired on the protestors in self defence”. Referring to setting on fire of Army Goodwill school by irate mob, Brigadier said those people, whose children study in the school set the school on fire. “Few people entered the premises of the school and set it on fire. Two classrooms and school library was damaged in the incident. We showed utmost restraint and did not retaliate,” he said. He said 328 Kashmiri students study in the school.
