Srinagar: Over fifty thousand people living in the border belt areas of Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir got connected with mobile services, after a long wait. A local from the border region of Loran said that due to lack of mobile communication, they had to travel 50 kilometres in order to get connected to their relatives living in various places. “Loran is a border area, two-three days back, the BSNL set up a tower. Before the construction of tower, we used to face a lot of problems. I would like to thank the central government and the Jammu and Kashmir government. Earlier there was no means of communication, for which we had to travel 50 kilometres when we had to talk to anybody from Jammu or Delhi. Even for medical emergencies, we had to travel a distance of 50 kilometres to communicate,” he said. The locals said that with the installation of the tower, they have got connected to the rest of the country through mobile services and have got access to the Internet. The mobile tower has been installed in the region after many years, which is providing relief to the people during the time of emergencies. A local, Javaid Iqbal Tantary, said that due to the tower, they are able to avail many facilities. “We are very happy about the construction of the BSNL tower here. Before this, we were isolated from our own country. We stay in such far-flung hilly regions, that to communicate to any relative or friend it would become difficult. We were not able to communicate, and thus the facilities that reached us were limited,” he said. Though there have been mobile towers set up, the state officials were reluctant about setting up mobile towers in the border regions of the state. The officials feared that the signals maybe intercepted by terrorists and their facilitators in the border areas to intensify the activities in this region. But after analysing and enhancing the technology in order to contain the signals emitted by the towers, the officials have finally gained confidence to set it up.
