Jammu: The government Friday disclosed that over Rs 9.4 crores have been spent on security cover of separatist leadership in Kashmir in last 12 years. The amount spent to provide security to separatists has also gone up from Rs 15,70,750 in 2001 to Rs 1,66,10,251 in 2012. In a written reply to a question in the Assembly today, government said Rs 9,47,03,700 had been incurred on the account of providing security cover to separatist leaders in Kashmir in last 12 years. “Of this, Rs 4,96,61,299 was spent on salaries of Personal Security Officers (PSOs) and drivers provided for the security of Hurriyat and separatist leaders,” it said. It said while Rs 71,10,268 was spent on fuel required for government vehicles used in the security of the separatists, Rs 3,79,32,133 was spent on the account of salaries of the residential security guards provided to them during the same period. However, the government has not revealed names of the separatist leaders, who have been provided the security cover. Meanwhile, MLA Langate Sheikh Abdur Rashid questioned separatist leaders for taking security cover. “On moral grounds, they should not take the security cover. Instead they should carry licensed weapons or private body guards for their protection.' “How can the police and CRPF personnel protect the Hurriyat leaders despite being responsible for killing of civilians in Kashmir in two decades? Police is responsible for killing of people, detaining youth under Public Safety Act (PSA) and detaining minors,” he said. He urged the separatist leaders to take cue from Syed Ali Geelani, who despite repeated pleas from government has turned down the security cover. “After taking security cover, the separatist leaders have no right to talk against the Government,” he added.
