Encroachment on 1000 kanal JDA land removed, 150 structures razed

Jammu: In a major joint operation by officials from Jammu Development Authority (JDA), Police and District Administration, nearly 1000 kanal land encroached upon by many land grabbers from Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and some areas of Kashmir valley was cleared today by demolishing nearly 150 odd structures and compound walls while at least three persons were injured during clashes between protesting encroachers, police and JDA men. Sensing some deep rooted conspiracy after nearly 200 tents were erected on Government (JDA- State- Forest) land near Sidhra Golf Course at Majeen village at the bank of river Tawi in just past 3-4 days by some people, the JDA came into action to save its land. They wondered how, such a large number of people can dare to raise tents and temporary structure on Government land with any support from political or some other influential people. Though, the operation was started yesterday afternoon, yet the JDA officials who were less in number faced tough resistance and were made to run away by the land grabbers after they resorted to stone pelting on them. Today, the operation was launched early in the morning under the supervision of Director Land, JDA Babu Ram and secretary Yousuf Malik. Vice Chairperson JDA Sarita Chouhan and DIG Jammu-Kathua Range J P Singh and Additional DC Jammu were also camping there to supervise the operation. About half a dozen JCBs were used to demolish houses, semi-concrete and Kutcha structures besides boundary walls and plinth by the JDA. The land grabbers on seeing large number of police men and nearly 150 employees resorted the stone pelting. The police lobbed several tear gas shells to disperse the mob and the ding-dong battle continued for several hours at the site. When JCBs were demolishing structures several women lay down in front of machines and were removed by lady police. An employee of JDA received injury on his leg while a cop also sustained injury due to stonning. A woman land grabber was also hurt in the incident. Later, these land grabbers moved to National Highway and started protest. They also disrupted movement of traffic for some time. However, the police made them to run. It is said that huge Forest land has also been encroached upon in the same belt near Golf Course and the department has yet to take fresh action. The VC JDA said that nearly 150 employees were involved in the operation today and the police fully assisted the JDA operation. She said nearly 2000 kanal of JDA land was there at Majeen village and nearly 50 percent of the encroached land has been cleared. She said nearly 200 to 300 tents in planned manner had been raised on Government land by some unknown people in past few days. They were made to flee. Ms Chouhan said this land had been grabbed several years back but fresh encroachment at large scale was witnessed in last one week. She said two Executive Engineers of JDA were also involved in operation and entire cleared area will be fenced shortly so as the protect cleared land in future from the grabbers. Ms Chouhan disclosed that huge JDA land in Dwara area near Golf Course is also under the illegal possession of some people and the operation will be continued for some more days. Meanwhile, Minister for Transport and CAPD Choudhary Ramzan accompanied by provincial president of NC, Devinder Singh Rana and IGP Jammu Dilbagh Singh visited the area this evening and pacified the agitating people. They asked people not to indulge in unlawful activities.
