Rajouri: Even as militancy has almost died down in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, the unclaimed explosives and buried landmines still pose a threat to unsuspecting innocent people. This was revealed by a tragic incident here today. Two school going children, both brother and sister, were killed while playing with an unclaimed grenade on the way to school in the general area of Mangota under the jurisdiction of Police Station Thanamandi in district Rajouri. However, locals gathered in front of army camp and accused army jawans of throwing the grenade towards the children suspecting them to be militants. According to reports, two children identified as Shazeena Kouser, 9, and her brother Khursheed Mehmood, both children of Lal Hussain resident of Baryoon Dharra, in Thanamandi tehsil were returning from school when near a bush they found a round object and tried to play with it. It immediately exploded and both the brother and sister were blown into pieces. Immediately people gathered at the spot and shifted the body pieces in the Thanamandi market where hundreds of people gathered at the Chowk and started raising slogans against army, alleging that the latter threw the grenade towards the children suspecting them to be militants. Taking a serious notice of this tragic incident local people of Thannamandi gathered in front of army camp and raised anti-army slogans, they were demanding immediate inquiry against this careless attitude of the concerned army that led to this tragedy. People also criticised the partial role of district administration as no officer visited the spot to pacify the agitating protesters. While talking to KTNS Defence spokesman Mishra stated that they children were unknowingly playing with an abandoned grenade and suddenly it exploded and thus they were blown into pieces.
