BDC Polls After CC Meet: Soz

Srinagar: Former Union Minister and Pradesh Congress Committee president, Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz today said that elections to the Block Development Councils (BDCs) would be held soon after Coordination Committee approves necessary provisions of 73rd Amendment in its meeting being held in a couple of days. Addressing a function organized in connection with the Ist death anniversary of veteran Congress Leader and former MLC Yash Pal Khajuria at Udhampur today, the PCC chief said that Block Development Council elections will be held shortly after the Coordination Committee of both NC and Congress discusses and approves the points of the document finalized on the 73rd Amendment pertaining to strengthening of the Panchayats. He said all the issues of public concern are in the knowledge of Congress Party and they are being given due attention. He said the Panchayati Raj system is being strengthened so that it becomes effective instrument of service to the people at the grass-root level and can play the desired role as expected from the basic institutions of democracy. Prof Soz said that Co-ordination Committee meeting of Congress-NC would be shortly held to discuss the suggestions of the Congress Party for empowerment of Panchayats by incorporating necessary provisions of 73rd Amendment. The document in this regard has been finalized. After this exercise is over, the election to the Block Development Councils would be held soon, the PCC chief maintained. The PCC chief assured the Panchs and Sapanchs that besides other things to make this institution affective, they would be provided honorarium and offered insurance cover and all other things necessary for making these institutions effective to deliver to the expectations of the people. However, he asked the Panchayat representatives to be on the forefront to fight against corruption and to ensure that various Central and State sponsored schemes for the welfare of the people are implemented properly. While reiterating the commitment of the party for equitable treatment to all the three regions of the State, the Congress leader asked the party men to unitedly fight against communal and divisive forces. He recalled the services of Yash Pal Khajuria, who was dedicated leader of the Party. Prof Soz announced that a community hall in the memory of Late Yash Pal Khajuria would be constructed at Udhampur for which he announced Rs 10 lakh out of his MPLAD Fund. He also asked other legislators to contribute for the same. On this occasion, Saurabh Khajuria, son of Late Yash Pal Kahjuria was inducted as State secretary of NSUI. Senior Party leaders Peerzada Mohd Sayeed (Minister), Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma, Ex-MP Dharam Pal Sharma, MLA Chenani Krishan Chand Bhagat, Ravinder Sharma, G N Monga–MLCs, Indu Pawar–MLA, Swarn Lata, Prem Sagar, Kuldip Verma, Brij Mohan Sharma, P S Pathania, Anil Pachiala, Ashwani Puri, Rashid Choudhary, Geeta Devi and others were also present. They paid their tributes to Late Khajuria on the occasion.
