Cong, NC Finalize Candidates For LC Polls

Jammu: The ruling alliance partners National Conference and Congress Thursday finalized their candidates for the four state legislative council seats to be chosen by Panchayat representatives. Bharatiya Janta Party and Peoples Democratic Party have also announced their candidates. Sources told Rising Kashmir that Congress high command had given consent to two names on the recommendations of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Saifuddin Soz. “Prof Soz had gone to Delhi after a unanimous decision was taken by the party during a meeting. They have selected vice president Congress Ghulam Nabi Monga from Srinagar and Sham Lal Bhagat, a Sarpanch from Chenab Valley,” sources said. They said Monga was chosen for being a close confidante of Soz while Bhagat’s candidature was supported by union health minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. Sources said Bhagat will file his nominations tomorrow at the Doda deputy commissioner’s office while Monga will file nominations in Srinagar at 3 PM. They said Monga had a close competition with Vijay Bakaya but the former’s name was finalized later. According to sources, National Conference has also finalized its candidates- Ali Muhammed Dar from Chadoora (Kashmir) and Rattan Lal Gupta (Jammu). “Consensus was reached on the candidature of Gupta and Dar during a party meeting but there was no official confirmation from any party leader in this regard.” Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finalized its four candidates two each from Jammu and Kashmir division. PDP has selected Gurmeet Singh Bajwa and Ved Prakash Gupta from Jammu division, and Peerzada Muhammad Hussain and Saifullah Bhat from Kashmir division. They are likely to file their nominations Friday afternoon. Sources told Rising Kashmir BJP has also selected its three candidates - two from Jammu division and one from Ladakh. “The party has also decided to support an independent candidate namely Sarpanch Dar from Srinagar.” BJP leader, Dr Jatinder Singh said Col Uttam Singh and Rashpal Verma will contest from Jammu while Ashraf Ali will contest from Ladakh. Friday (Nov 16) is the last day for the nominations and the voting for MLC polls would be conducted on December 3 while the counting will be conducted on December 6.
