All-women Group Crosses LoC, Makes History

Muzaffarabad: The first-ever delegation of women social activists from Jammu and Kashmir Monday crossed Line of Control (LoC) near Chakothi to attend a Cross-LoC Women’s Conference to be held on Tuesday. The delegation was received at Chakoti Bridge and was garlanded by the host women. The delegation was briefed about the area while the school children greeted them with songs. The visit of the women activists has been facilitated by Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation (CDR) in collaboration with PaK-based, AJK Women for Peace Organization, the latter being the host of the Intra-Kashmir Conference . The ten-member delegation comprises of chairperson HOPE, Nighat Shafi Pandit, former principals of Government Women’s College M A Road Srinagar, Prof Nusrat Andrabi and Prof T Joldan, Qurrat-ul-Ain, Prof Effat Yasmeen, Prof Ravinderjit Kour, Prof Rekha Chowdhary, Prof Yasmin Ashai, Ellora Puri and Ayesha Saleem. The group would take part in the two-day Cross-LoC conference in which women activists from different parts of Pakistan will participate. The group will also meet people from various shades of opinion- political leaders, social activists, academicians and journalists. This is the first visit of women activists from Kashmir to Pakistan-administered Kashmir since 1947. One such conference was organized in Srinagar in November 2007 and the last was held in Gulmarg in September 2011. The delegation will stay in PaK for a week and return on November 12.
