2nd Day Of Eid Passes Off Peacefully

Srinagar: The second day of Eid-ul-Zuha passed off peacefully in Kashmir today. Barring Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), all other senior separatist leaders were released from house arrest. On the first day of Eid yesterday, protest demonstrations, clashes between protestors and cops, tear gassing and lathi charge were witnessed at Eidgah here and Sopore. Almost all the senior separatist leaders Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mohammad Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Javid Ahmad Mir and Shahid-ul-Islam were placed under house arrest and prevented from offering congregation Eid prayers. Geelani had called for protest after Eid prayers and passing off resolution during the congregation in support of right of self determination and total demilitarisation. Hurriyat (G) chairman was placed under house today also. However, large number of people visited his residence at Haiderpora to convey Eid greetings to him. People also visited the residences of other separatist leaders. People continued to distribute meat of sacrificial animals for the second consecutive today among their neighbours relatives and friends. Because of the significant movement of people for distributing meat and exchanging Eid greetings, some public transport vehicles also plied on roads today. Due to rush of private vehicles, traffic jamming was also witnessed at several roads particularly on the stretch between Rambagh to Natipora Crossing. Children dressed in colourful outfits converged on parks and roads. They burst crackers till late this evening. Parks witnessed more rush today compared to yesterday. Despite Eid related celebration, security forces in large number continued to remain deployed in sensitive areas of city. However, there was no report of any untoward incident.
