Srinagar: Terming the attacks on Sarpanchs and Panchs as handiwork of Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of militant outfits, IGP Kashmir S M Sahai Tuesday said police can’t provide security cover to all the panchayat members. “Owing to lack of resources, police can’t provide security cover to all the elected Sarpanchs and Panchs. It is not only difficult but impossible as well,” IGP Sahai told a local news gathering agency, CNS. Terming the attacks on Sarpanchs and Panchs very unfortunate, he said the inputs available with police makes it clear that OGWs of militant outfits have played a key role in harassing panchayat members. “We believe that most of the attacks on Sarpanchs and Panchs were carried out by OGW. We are trying our best to have a check on these elements”. “OGW’s are mostly active in Tral, Shopian, Kulgam, Pattan and Sopore area and efforts are on arrest them. Police recently arrested three OGWs along with arms and ammunition from Tral area in Pulwama district. A manhunt has been launched to trace others as well,” he said. IGP refused to admit that nature of attacks on Sarpanchs and Panchs may be politically motivated. “We are trying to ascertain the facts. It will be premature to say anything at this stage. Everything will be clear after proper investigation”. Meanwhile, Sahai visited Kreeri to oversee the investigation of killing of Naib Sarpanch Mohammad Shafi Teeli in Kreeri. He asked police officials to expedite the investigation of the case so that perpetrators are brought to book. IGP directed DIG North Kashmir and SSP Baramulla to review the security of the area and formulate measures to bolster security of panchayat members. “Police will try to ensure safety of the elected members. The assault on the elected representatives of the people will be considered an assault on the will of the people and police will take whatever it takes to provide them all possible security,” he said. IGP claimed that police solved the killing of Sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Dar in Hawoorah, Kulgam and all the accused in the case have been charge sheeted. “Police have arrested one person associated with the separatist organization involved in instigating killing of Sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Yattoo at Palhalan Pattan and investigation in the case is moving in right direction”.
