Srinagar: Police today arrested two security guards of Minister for Public Health Engineering and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din, for beating up a Traffic Police Officer last evening when he asked them to stop at the traffic signal while Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed for the strongest possible action under law against the erring constables. Police arrested two security guards of the Minister, Mohammad Shafi (372 Security) and Mohammad Abbas (219, 3rd Battalion, Security), after an FIR was lodged against them in police station Kothibagh, Srinagar. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic, Shafqat Watali, said here that they had lodged FIR against the two security men, who beat up a Traffic Police officer when he asked them to stop at the red light. The two policemen have been booked for assaulting a Government servant on duty and charged with attempt to murder (Section 307 of Ranbir Penal Code). Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted that the police constables, who had beaten-up the Traffic Police officer have been arrested and booked. He said he had directed the Police Department to take strongest possible action against the erring constables. 'The cops, who beat the Traffic Police officer, have been arrested and booked. I have asked for the strongest possible action under law against the copsíí, Omar tweeted. Sub-Inspector Mohan Lal was beaten last evening after he stopped the escort vehicle of the Minister. The ministerial cavalcade was heading towards the Ministerís residence at Gupkar Road and it violated a traffic signal near the Tourist Reception Centre last night. The Traffic Police officer said that he stopped the escort jeep of the Ministerís motorcade from jumping the red light but two of the guards stepped out of the vehicle and thrashed him with rifle butts in full public view. The Police officer while narrating the incident said last evening at around 5 pm, the Ministerís driver jumped the red signal at TRC. 'When we stopped him and told him that he had violated the traffic rule, the driver stopped the car in the middle of the road. When I asked him to move to one side, he said you donít know whose car you have stopped. I said I know it is the Minister, and we honour him, but what you did is wrong. After this, his PSOs got down from the car and thrashed one of my colleagues. I said if you have any complaint, you should speak to our seniors. And when I tried to stop them from attacking my colleague, the other one hit me with the butt of his rifle,' said the officer. The Officer said that the intervention of the pedestrians saved him but he received serious injury. He said that the Ministerís car along with his escort vehicle fled from the scene after the incident. The police officer was admitted to hospital for treatment after the incident. The Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din said here that his car had passed the TRC signal and it was his rear escort vehicle that was stopped at the red light. He said that he was on way to a Television interview and came to know about the incident after the interview was over. The Minister said that it was not his personal security staff that beat the Traffic Police officer but security escort of the police department. He said that the escort keeps changing every now and then. The Minister said that FIR has been registered against the two cops and law will take its own course. It may be mentioned here that the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has installed traffic lights recently in Srinagar city and Traffic Police have been trying to ensure that people follow the traffic signals and reduce traffic congestion and jams in the city where traffic has increased enormously over the years. But a sizable number of motorists ignore the traffic signals and traffic police ensures that there is no violation of the traffic signals.
