Sarpanch’s Killing Triggers Fear Psychosis

Srinagar: A day after suspected militants shot dead a sarpanch in Pahalan village, three sarpanchs, eleven panchs and a deputy sarpanch from different wards of Palhalan village in this North Kashmir district resigned on Tuesday. Sources said three sarpanchs Ghulam Mohammad Sofi son of Abdul Rashid Sofi (Palhalan Ward E), Abdul Khaliq Bhat Son of Abdul Samad Bhat (Palhalan Ward C) and Mohammad Akbar Bhat son of Abdul Jabar Bhat (Palhalan ward B) submitted their resignations today. “The Deputy sarpanch Nazir Ahmad Kumar son of Ghulam Ahmad Kumar (Palhalan ward E) and 11 panchs of different wards including Ghulam Nabi Sofi son of Ghulam Rasool Sofi (Ward 2 Palhalan E),Ghulam Mohiuddin Kumar son of Habibullah Kumar (Ward 06 Palhalan E), Raja Begum wife of Abdul Rashid Bhagat (Ward 4 Palhalan E), Mohammad Akbar Kuchay son of subhan Kuchay (Ward C), Shabir Ahmad Bhat son of Sultan Bhat (Ward C), Farooq Ahmad Bhat son of Ali Mohammad Bhat (Ward C), Abdul Jabar Bhat son of Mohammad Sultan Bhat (Ward C), Abdul Majeed Tantary son of Ghulam Ahmad Tantary (Ward C), Mohammd Maqbool Bhat son of Abdul Jabar Bhat (Ward C), Rehana Mushtaq wife of Mushtaq Ahmad Tantray (Ward C) and Farooq Ahmad Sofi son of Ghulam Mohammad Sofi (Ward B) have also resigned,” they said They said of these, some have submitted their resignation to Block Development Officer Pattan and others have forwarded it to Panchayat officer. “Some have published their resignations in newspapers”. Sarpanch of Palhalan Ward C Abdul Khaliq Bhat said the killing of senior sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo by gunmen last evening has raised a safety concern among all the panch members. “It has fear psychosis among the panchs and sarpanchs”. Panchayat incharge officer of Palhalan (Ward E) Basharat Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that they have forwarded resignations of the panch members to District Panchayat Officer, Baramulla. BDO Pattan could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
