Geelani, Mirwaiz Under House Arrest

Srinagar: The chairmen of both factions of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq continued to remain under house arrest at their respective residences on Saturday. Geelani was taken in custody while he was proceeding for Friday prayers at a local mosque. He was lodged in Police Station Humhama and was released in the evening. A Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar said after his release, Geelani was again plain under house arrest. A large posse of policemen continued to remain deployed outside his Hyderpora residence and they did not allow him to venture out, he said. Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also continued to remain under house arrest at his Nageen residence. He was placed under house soon after he returned from Jama Masjid after offering Friday prayers. Meanwhile, DFP chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Zafar Akbar Bhat, Javed Ahmad Mir, Farooq Ahmad Dar, Yasmeen Raja and others were detained by police and shifted to Central Jail Srinagar.
