Srinagar: The chairman of the Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, on Monday called for cross-LoC trade to be kept totally under the control of the people of divided Kashmir. “The hegemony of non-state traders over this commercial initiative amounts to economic exploitation of Kashmiris, and runs contrary to the interest of genuine traders,” the Mirwaiz said at a religious gathering at the Naqshband Sahib shrine. “The unwarranted interference of the customs department and the hegemony of non-state traders defeat the very purpose of cross-LoC commerce,” he said. “The process should be totally under the control of Kashmiri on both sides so that it benefits the people of the state,” the Mirwaiz said, adding that he would take the issue up with Pakistani authorities on his forthcoming visit of the country. The Mirwaiz expressed surprise that main city thoroughfares were blocked in the holy month of Ramzan for rallies by pro-India India parties while the pro-freedom leadership was barred even from Friday prayers in the sacred month. Later, inaugurating an exclusive shopping mall in the Munawwarabad quarter of the city, the Mirwaiz urged Kashmiri youth not to waste time waiting for government jobs but to undertake business and entrepreneurship to earn livelihoods. “The younger generation should join business and industry to better their economic condition,” he said.
