Srinagar: The gunbattle between militants and security forces entered seventh day in north Kashmir's Handwara-Kupwara belt on Friday, with the death of two more ultras. The militant death toll has risen to five in the past one week. Seven security personnel were injured in the encounter. At least eight structures, including three houses of villagers, were destroyed in the gunbattle. The 15-hour long encounter left a trail of destruction in the north Kashmir village. Several families have lost their home and entire belongings in the devastating blaze during the gun battle between holed up militants and security forces. On Thursday, three militants were killed at Makan village in Nowgam sector. This encounter started after forces launched a search operation in Bowan village following an information about presence of three more militants in one of the gutted houses. Two of them managed to escape. The seven-day operation and the two encounters have come in the backdrop of the June 19 killing of an army man with a sniper shot near Handwara’s Rani Post. North Kashmir is witnessing a heightened militancy with Lashkar-e-Taiba making fresh recruitment. Since June, the police have claimed to arrest seven militants in Sopore, adjacent to Handwara.
