Srinagar: The Army Thursday claimed to have killed three foreign militants in an encounter near the Line of Control in north Kashmir. The gunbattle in the Mankal forest near Nowgam in Baramulla district started Wednesday and was on till late Thursday, the Army said. The security forces are trying to establish whether the slain militants had infiltrated recently or had been in the area for some time. “After getting information about presence of militants, an operation was launched on the evening of July 4. Today morning contact was established with the militants and in the ensuing encounter, three militants, likely foreigners, were killed,” said Army spokesman Lt Col J S Brar. Officials said the area where the encounter took place is close to Bangus Valley, which has been used as a transit hideout by militants after infiltrating into J&K.
