JKP Warned Of Threat To Prof Ghani’s Life

Srinagar: The state police is said to have been warned of a threat to the life of Hurriyat (M) leader, Prof Abdul Ghani Bhat, and asked to heighten security for the moderate separatist leadership. Intelligence agencies have warned that the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and the Jaish-e-Muhammad militant groups could make a bid on the life Prof Ghani to disrupt peace in Kashmir, a national news agency quoting official sources said. Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan too could become targets of such a bid, the intelligence agencies have said. The militant groups could target Prof Ghani for his recent controversial remarks on the relevance of the UN resolutions on Kashmir, the news agency said In 1995, the former Hurriyat Conference chairman had blamed the Hizb for killing his brother Muhammad Sultan Bhat, it said. In view of the heightened threat, central intelligence agencies have further advised the Jammu and Kashmir police to extend “shadow security” for separatist leaders refusing government protection.
