Srinagar: Alleging that the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference was secretly preparing for elections in Kashmir, the legislator from Kupwara’s Langate constituency, Engineer Abdul Rashid Wednesday said his oath as MLA never stopped him from calling Kashmir a disputed region. He termed the six-decade-old UN resolutions regarding Kashmir as “all-time relevant” and said they would always remain a reference point in the resolution of the dispute. Taking a dig at the rally Hurriyat (M) held in Langate on Tuesday, Engineer said, “Elected sarpanchs, defeated candidates, aides of former ministers and most of the political activists from mainstream parties shared stage with Bilal Gani Lone and Professor Abdul Gani Bhat. They shouted slogans which signal their willingness to fight elections. They even introduced their candidate.” The legislator further said he was not bothered who fights elections from Kupwara, “but the point is why Hurriyat leaders conceal their real intentions even as they project individuals as candidates.” Playing the video footage of Hurriyat rally in Langate before a crowded press conference, Engineer Rashid said, “They talk of boycott in city but subtly prepare for municipal and assembly polls in villages.” Heaping scorn at Professor Abdul Ghani, the legislator said that the Hurriyat leaders rubbed shoulders with mainstream politicians and activists in order to root for support they would need in upcoming elections. A reporter pointed to Jihad Council Chief Syed Salalhuddin’s statement about Panchayat elections in which the militant commander had left the question of participating open-ended. “Salahuddin is not the only person who represents movement here. Go and ask Geelani what he feels, ask others.” In an oblique dig at Professor Bhat, Engineer Rashid said, “UN resolutions are the foundation of Kashmir dispute. Whoever wants to withdraw from those resolutions is harming our national interest. If Hurriyat leadership is sincere enough it should declare its intentions, enter the assembly and take up the cause of freedom and UN resolutions, which I believe, are all-time relevant.” He has taken oath under Indian constitution to uphold the integrity and sovereignty of India, they why this separatist posturing? To this the legislator said, “Taking oath was a compulsion”.
