Srinagar: In an important development, the ruling National conference president Farooq Abdullah Saturday restructured party and appointed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as working president of the party while firebrand leader Mustafa Kamal was again entrusted with the responsibilities of additional general secretary of the party, a post he had to surrender after controversy over his remarks against Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi. Farooq will continue to be NC president. The decision was taken in a high level meeting held under the chairmanship of party president Farooq Abdullah. Sources said Farooq wanted Omar to take charge of party in view of forthcoming municipal polls because of his non availability in the state due to his engagements in Delhi. “There was a very comprehensive and detailed discussion on the preparedness of party for municipal polls,” they said. “Due to my engagements, I am not able to see party matters on daily basis and it was hence decided that Omar would function as working president to strengthen the party,” Farooq told reporters at Sher-e-Kashmir bhawan, Jammu. He said MLA Hazratbal Mustafa Kamal has been appointed as additional general secretary “MP Mohammad Shafi (uri) will be party’s chief spokesman, Tanveer Sadiq, the former corporator will be party’s new spokesperson for Kashmir province and MLA Kishtawr Sajad Ahmad Kichlo will function as spokesperson for Jammu province,” he said. The former MLC A R. Badana has been appointed as vice president of Gujar and Bakerwal cell of the party. Sources said Farooq flew to Srinagar after the press conference and drove straightway to party general secretary Sheikh Nazir’s residence to brief him about the developments. Meanwhile, Kamal has thanked party leadership for again appointing him as additional general secretary of the party. “My priority would be to strengthen the party at the grass root level with the support and cooperation of the people. I will work in close co-ordination with entire NC leadership to strengthen the party at the grass root level,” he said.
