Srinagar: A wife-husband duo was reportedly beaten by sons of Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora and former Chief Executive Councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Tsering Dorgee in Leh town on Saturday. After the couple approached a local court, police registered a case and arrested the duo. “At at around 6 am, when Ghulam Hussain, 50, went to open his shop opposite to Leh hospital, a car rammed into the glass windowpanes of the shop,” Hussain’s nephew, Ali Asghar told Rising Kashmir over phone from Leh. He said the shop owner rushed out of the shop and asked driver how he bumped the vehicle into his shop. “This infuriated two persons present in the car. They came out and started beating Hussain. They beat him to pulp and vandalized his shop,” he said. The two attackers were identified as Skarma Stalzin son of Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora and Rahul son of former LAHDC chief executive council Tsering Dorgee. “After Hussain’s wife, Razia Bano, came to know about the incident, she rushed to the shop, where she was attacked by attackers and beaten mercilessly. She sustained injuries and injury marks are visible all over her body,” Asghar said. He alleged that both the attackers were looking for knives to kill the husband-wife duo. “The attackers were also shouting slogans against a particular community, claiming that they would wipe them out of Leh,” he further alleged. Asghar said the nearby shopkeepers intervened and took the victims under their supervision till the attackers left the spot. “Later, we took victims to hospital, where they were given medical treatment. Both of them are bed-ridden,” he said. The relatives of the injured couple alleged that police did not book the accused since they were the sons of influential people. “First they arrested them. However, later they let them off,” Asghar said. Later, the Muslim Youth Coordination Committee and relatives of the couple approached Chief Judicial Magistrate Leh and filed an application regarding the incident. In the application, the complainants Ghulam Hussain and Razia Bano have alleged that they were beaten without any reason by Skarma and Rahul. They also accused the duo of ‘molesting, dragging and beating’ Razia and using abusive language meant to hurt sentiments of a particular community. “The court sought a report from police,” Hussain’s relative Asghar said. He said it alerted police and the cops re-arrested the attackers. Meanwhile, sources said Police Station Leh has filed an FIR No 34 under section 307, 506, 323, 354 against the attackers. However, SSP Leh Vivek Gupta could not be reached for comment. Tourism Minister Rigzin Jora was also not available for comments.
