Rajouri: Peace and normalcy that prevailed in Rajouri town today after more than 10 days of turmoil leading to imposition of curfew and registration of several First Information Reports (FIRs) wouldnít have been possible had the saner elements in both the communities not prevailed upon the people and motivated them to reach into an agreement with the Group of Ministers (GoMs) to maintain centuries old bond of mutual brotherhood. Authoritative sources told the Excelsior that veteran leaders of majority community, which is in minority in the country, played the role of elder brother and had to sacrifice a lot for paving the way for agreement between the GoM and representatives of minority community yesterday to ensure return of peace and normalcy in the sensitive border town of this district as the tensions had been threatening to spread elsewhere in Jammu region if not controlled immediately. 'The majority community facilitated the agreement between leaders of minority community and the GoM. Leaders from majority community too had a list of their demands and grievances but they didnít press for them in the meeting with the GoM as they didnít want to keep Rajouri disturbed any moreíí, they said. Sources said both majority and minority communities shared business, houses and had many other things in common. Their students have been studying together in educational institutions. There is no political party or social organisation in Rajouri, which didnít have members from both the communities, they said and added that it were some miscreants, who had created trouble and not the real representatives of any communities. The majority community in their meeting with the GoM had made it clear that they wanted return of peace and had no objections to arrest of miscreants involved in attack on religious procession of minorities. As another goodwill gesture, the majority community representatives not only visited the houses of minorities, which had been damaged by the IRP personnel during a clash with procession, but also condemned police excesses to express its solidarity with the people leading to restoration of confidence and mutual brotherhood in both communities. Sources added that the minorities, which had been living with mutual trust, brotherhood, peace and amity with their Muslim brethren for centuries together, too were liberal and didnít make any prestige issue of their demands and agreed to resume business on assurances of the GoM. According to sources, the GoM comprising Industry and Commerce Minister Surjit Singh Slathia, Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma, Advisor to Chief Minister Mubarak Gul, Political Advisor to CM Devender Rana and Minister of State for Power and MLA Rajouri, Shabir Khan accommodated both the communities, addressed their genuine concerns and conceded rightful demands of both of them to lead to restoration of peace and normalcy in the town, which had been shattered after several years. Sources admitted that local administration of Rajouri was found lacking in maintaining proper liaison and rapport with both the communities, which led to flare up of anger and ultimately the removal of the Deputy Commissioner and SSP Rajouri. Sources pointed out that both communities had maintained peace and harmony even at the peak of militancy when the militants at various places massacred people from both the communities across twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. There was a silver lining in the entire situation. The senior leaders of both the communities were not swayed away by the situation and maintained cool and calm to ensure that the situation didnít aggravate and reach a point of no return. Ultimately, both the communities prevailed over the situation and with the help of the GoM managed to cool down the situation leading to return of complete normalcy in Rajouri, sources said.
