Jammu: The alliance partners in Jammu and Kashmir have started flexing muscles to consolidate their vote bank ahead of Municipal polls scheduled to be held in April this year. The Congress party, already facing the heat of sheltering tainted Ministers in the Omar Abdullah-led coalition Government, on Sunday kick started its campaign by holding a large rally here in the Dusshera grounds. On the occasion the Congress leadership made clear its intention to their alliance partners to unseat seven suspended BJP MLA's from the state assembly and hold fresh elections at the earliest. Addressing the public rally Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Prof Saif Ud Din Soz said, 'we have already told our alliance partner to unseat seven BJP MLA's, suspended from the party for cross voting during the legislative council polls last year. 'The speaker of the state assembly has the authority to decide and fresh elections should be held on these seven seats,' Prof Soz said. The Congress party is keen on contesting by-elections on these seven seats as it smells an opportunity to further improve its tally in the state assembly. All attempts were made by the congress leaders to put up a united face of the faction ridden party. The charisma of Congress President Sonia Gand his daughter Priyanka Gandhi was all visible in the rally ground. The Congress leaders and organisers of the rally had specially designed king size cut outs of Priyanka Gandhi to woo the youth electorate on its side. This is for the first time the Congress party has officially used pictures of Priyanka Gandhi in the election campaign material. Upbeat party leaders one by one urged the voters to support congress party. None of the Congress leaders sought people’s support for the alliance Government. On its part the National Conference is also not lacking behind. Chairing provincial executive committee meeting here on saturday Dr Farooq Abdullah had called upon the party rank and file to gear up for the Municipal polls and highlight the achievements of the Omar Abdullah govt among the masses. The party President Dr Farooq Abdullah has already chalked out a comprehensive program to hold party elections in the coming weeks and is looking forward to make fresh inroads in Jammu region. The recent resignation drama involving Peerzada Mohd Sayeed has already created a divide between the alliance partners in the state.Even after the congress party leaders had claimed that the party Presdient Sonia Gandhi had refused to accept his resignation NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah told reporters in Jammu on saturday that he is still waiting to hear the final decision from the Congress President herself.
