Srinagar: In a snub to J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Congress has rejected the resignation of its senior leader and Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed. In the wake of allegations that he illegally helped his son pass the Class X state board examination, Peerzada had sent his resignation to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. “His resignation has not been accepted,” J&K Congress spokesman Muzaffar Parray told The Sunday Express. “He has been asked to stay in the Cabinet.” On Friday, Omar had said Peerzada would be divested of Education portfolio but would continue as the Minister for Public Enterprise. Asked why he had submitted his resignation to the Congress president and not to the Chief Minister, Peerzada said he was answerable only to Sonia Gandhi and not to Omar Abdullah. “The party has conveyed me that the resignation has not been accepted,” Peerzada told his supporters on Saturday. “I was told by senior party leader Ahmed Patel that I should stay in the Cabinet and that the resignation has been rejected.”
