Srinagar: Militants carried out a series of attacks on police station and an escort of Superintendent Police in Sopore in North Kashmir’s Baramulla on Saturday. The attacks left a civilian dead and four others including two policemen injured. Sources said militants fired from automatic weapons towards Police Station Sopore at around 10 am. “The militants fired indiscriminately towards the police station. However, policemen stationed in the police station did not retaliate,” they said. They said once the firing stopped, policemen come out of the police station to take stock of the situation. “After sighting the policemen, the militants again fired indiscriminately towards the police station from different directions. The fire was returned by the cops and the exchange of fire continued for 15 minutes. A civilian was injured in the encounter,” they said. Sources said after the firing stopped, SP Sopore Imtiyaz Ahmad alongwith his cavalcade moved towards the police station to review the situation. “However, his escort was attacked by militants at main chowk, Sopore. The militants fired heavily towards SP’s escort party. The fire was returned by the cops and in the ensuing firefight, two policemen and two civilians were injured,” they said. They said the injured civilian later succumbed to injuries. “After the attack, one of the militants left his weapons near the corpse of the civilian and escaped from the area,” they said. “After the firing stopped, further police reinforcement was rushed towards the Sopore town. However, while the reinforcement was on, militants again struck and lobbed grenades from bus stand road,” they said. Sources said force personnel had cordoned off the Tawheed Bagh and areas in Sopore in the morning and launched search operation to flush out the militants hiding there. “The militants probably trapped in the area managed to give slip to forces and attacked police station and SP’s cavalcade,” they said. The militant attacks caused panic with people running helter skelter. The shopkeepers pulled down shutters of their shops and ran for cover and traffic went off the roads. However, normalcy was restored after some time. SHO Police Station Sopore Manzoor Ahmad identified the deceased civilian as Mehraj Hajam of Shahgund, Shadpora. Other injured civilians were identified as Muzaffer Bakshi and Tariq Ahmad of Sopore. “Two injured policemen Altaf Ahmad and Shabir Ahmad and two injured civilians were rushed to Srinagar hospitals for treatment ,” he said. He said after the militant attack, massive combing and search operation has been launched in old Sopore areas to flush out the militants responsible for the attack. The attack was the first of its kind after killing of top Lashker-Toiba commander Abdullah Uni in Sopore last year.
