New Delhi: Advocate Prashant Bhushan was today attacked in his chamber outside the Supreme Court by three men who claimed to be members of an organisation called the Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena. The goons slapped and punched Bhushan repeatedly, dragged him off his chair on to the floor, and continued to beat and kick him. The assault took place at around 4.15 pm in the presence of a camera crew from Times Now, which aired the footage. One of the attackers, a man called Inder Verma of Karai Village in Nangloi, has been arrested. The other two, identified as Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga and Vishnu Gupta, escaped. Bagga, who describes himself as president of Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena, spoke to The Indian Express over the phone and said the attack was in response to something that Bhushan had said about Kashmir. Bhushan is a prominent civil rights activist and one of the key aides of anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare. “He (Bhushan) said about 10 days back that Kashmir should be separated from India. The video is on YouTube. We cannot tolerate that,” Bagga said. In a pamphlet distributed on the Supreme Court premises, the organisation said it did not regret its action. Bhushan was talking to Times Now in his room (No. 301) in the New Lawyers’ Chambers situated across the road from the Supreme Court when he was attacked. TV pictures showed Bhushan talking intently to the lens, and then being distracted by a noise. As he looked up, someone standing to the left of the camera and outside its field of view, slapped him so hard that his spectacles flew off his face. One man in particular was seen slapping and kicking Bhushan viciously, who tried to fend him off. The man, now presumed to be Verma, eventually caught the advocate by his foot and pulled him from his chair and on to the floor. He then proceeded to kick Bhushan furiously until he was dragged away by the advocate’s staff. At a press conference called at 8 pm at his Noida home, Bhushan described the attackers as activists of the Sri Ram Sene, a rightwing vigilante group known for attacking Valentine’s Day couples. “They barged into my chamber and all I heard was ‘Kashmir! Kashmir!’ throughout,” Bhushan said. “There should be no violent response (to the attack), but they should perhaps be banned and legally and socially boycotted... This is like the Hitler days, when stormtroopers used to pick up unarmed people and beat them up,” he told reporters. Bhushan registered a complaint at Tilak Marg police station. The FIR charges the assailants under IPC Sections 462, 323 and 120(B). Bhushan then left for Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he spent about three hours. Manish Sisodia, Bhushan’s Team Anna colleague, told reporters, “He has minor injuries to his forehead and leg.” Bagga, who has Twitter and Facebook accounts, kept tweeting his defiance all evening. He announced the attack at around 5 pm: “we hit prashant bhushan hard in his chamber in supreme court.if u will try to break my nation,i will break ur heads.” Just after midnight, he tweeted: “tommorw i will give arrest at patiala house court at 11:30 am”. In between, “god can u send me in Afzal cell of tihar, plz”. While being taken away, Verma, the arrested man, said: “The issue was Kashmir. His views are an insult to our martyrs. It will not be tolerated.”
