3 more militants killed, Gurez toll rises to 13

Srinagar: As the massive Army operation against the infiltrated militants continued in Gurez sector in the North Kashmir's frontier district of Bandipora, the toll of infiltrators killed since August 20 in the sector has gone up to 13 after the killing of another militant near Baktor village today, while security forces gunned down two militants in separate ongoing operations in the frontier district of Kupwara today. Army foiled a major infiltration bid by killing 12 heavily armed militants near the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector of North Kashmir in the frontier district of Bandipora on August 20 and operation against some of the infiltrated militants is still going on in the dense forests, where they are believed to have taken refuge. General Officer Commanding (GOC), 28 Infantry Division, Major General S K Chakravorty had said that a group of 5-8 militants had managed to flee into the nearby Kanzalwan forests after the infiltration bid was foiled by Army. The Srinagar based Defence spokesman, while giving details, said today that post encounter intensive search operations were undertaken for the past two days in the jungles in the vicinity of the encounter site. 'After a brief gunfight Army was able to eliminate another terrorist near Baktor village while conducting search operations. The terrorist fired indiscriminately on being cornered but the alert troops immediately returned fired resulting in the elimination of terrorist. The operations were still on when the reports last came,' he added. Meanwhile, Army today killed an unidentified militant in Dard Haji in the upper reaches of Handwara. The operation against a group of militants was launched on Sunday evening and is still going on. Srinagar based, Defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar said here that a heavily-armed group of militants had visited Bhak Padlu area in the upper reaches of North Kashmir's Handwara town during the intervening night of August 20 and 21, where 4 to 5 families are putting up in a mud shed and had demanded food. 'The group of militants was intercepted by Army. Militants ran away and started indiscriminate firing, which created chaos triggering an encounter,' he said. One woman, Saleema Bano was killed and her husband Abdul Rashid Paswal was injured in the cross firing yesterday. The operation against these militants is still going on. One of them has been killed so far today. In another encounter at Lacchipora Handwara, one militant was killed in an ongoing operation today. A police spokesman said here today that acting on a specific information about the presence of heavily armed militants in Lacchipora forest area, police and 6-RR unit of Army launched an operation this afternoon to flush out these militants. The spokesman said that the advance party of the security forces was fired upon by the militants resulting in the encounter in which one militant was killed. The operation is still going on, the spokesman said. Lt Col Brar said a large quantity of war like stores were recovered which included two AK-47 rifles, nine magazines, 170 rounds, one map sheet, one mobile, one hand grenade, one global positioning system, one radio set and one compass. 'Identity of the dead terrorists is being ascertained. Operations are still in progress in the jungles of Handwara, ' he added.
