Srinagar: Kashmiri American Council Executive Director, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, who was arrested by the FBI recently on charges of ISI links and was later released on bail by a US court, has reaffirmed his continued commitment to help the people of Jammu and Kashmir irrespective of their religious background and cultural affiliations to achieve their right of self-determination to decide their future. In a statement, the Kashmiri leader said the people of J&K had no reason to fear that the world powers in general, and the United States in particular, would let them down. He recalled the traditional US support to the basic principles of fundamental freedoms and democratic processes; the personal vision of President Barack Obama about the South Asian region including Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Kashmir; the bipartisan expression of support by the US Administration to the Kashmir that ‘India and Pakistan must resolve the issue after taking into account the wishes and aspirations of the people’; and the indigenous, non-violent and peaceful nature of the movement initiated by the people of Kashmir, in particular since June 2008. Dr Fai quoted President Abraham Lincoln as having said, “The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.’
