Jammu: Stating that there was a need for the parties across the political spectrum of the country to evolve a consensus on resolving Kashmir issue with Pakistan, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Sunday said his party won’t allow sabotage of peace process. Addressing a public meeting here, Mufti said that strengthening of democratic institutions and emergence of a strong civil society was a good sign and the country has to respond to the prevailing positive atmosphere in the region. “There was no substitute to resolving the Kashmir issue that had dampened the immense economic potential of South Asian region for decades and people of Jammu and Kashmir were the worst victim of this problem. All sections of political opinion have to lend a helping hand in the process of solving Kashmir issue”, he said and appealed Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and principal opposition BJP to respond positively to the prevailing situation. Referring to the historic announcement made by the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee during his Kashmir visit in 2003, Mufti said Vajpayee’s announcement to extend hands of friendship towards Pakistan had boosted the peace process. “The peace process with Pakistan has to be above party politics and it has to be driven by long term goals of conflict resolution and cooperation,” he said. “Biggest ever Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) which has positive effect on improving relation between two countries was the opening of crossing points on Line of Control (LoC)”, he observed. Reaffirming commitment of his party to aggressively pursue the agenda of reconciliation and development in the State, the former chief minister asserted that his party, with the support of the masses, wouldn’t allow the peace process to be derailed. “As the peace process was pioneered by the PDP, party would take this process to the logical conclusion by establishing lasting peace in this region,” he said. He said party’s agenda was not to grab power but to establish sustainable peace in Jammu and Kashmir by fulfilling wishes and aspirations of the all sections of the society. “Since its formation PDP has been working to create an atmosphere of reconciliation and to restore a sense of security and fearlessness among the people”, Mufti said and observed that during the PDP-Congress regime in the state the situation was positively transformed in this region. Highlighting achievements of PDP-Congress regime in the State, he said, “With its three years regime the PDP has carved out a new path of peace and progress in this region'.
