Top Jaish commander, associate killed in Pulwama

Srinagar: A top Jaish-e-Muhammad commander and his associate were killed in a fierce gun battle with Army and police in district Pulwama today. SP Pulwama, Abdur Razak, identified the commander as Ahsan Bhai, South Kashmir divisional commander of JeM and his associate as Javed Ahmad Nengroo. Giving details of the encounter, Mr Razak said that during the intervening night of July 8 and 9, Pulwama Police in a joint operation with 44 Rashtirya Rifles of Army cordoned off village Hanjan Payeen, Rajpora in district Pulwama. The operation was launched on a tip off that two militants of the JeM were hiding in the house of one Ghulam Mohammad Mir resident of Hanjan Payeen, Rajpora. Mr Razak said that as the search party zeroed in on the house, where the militants were present, the militants hiding inside the house opened indiscriminate fire and lobbed grenades on the search party. The security forces retaliated resulting in a fierce encounter. An Army Major was injured in the encounter. He was immediately removed to the hospital. Panic gripped the village as the gun fight started. Civilians who were in the adjacent houses rushed out leaving behind their belongings and fled from the area for safety. Police said that some civilians were rescued from the adjacent houses by security forces and then only operation against the two holed up militants was launched. The operation was put on hold during the night but cordon was tightened to ensure that militants may not flee from the village under the cover of darkness. The two militants remained holed up for the night as the cordoned area was tightened by the security forces which didn't allow them to shift their positions during the night. The operation was resumed in the wee hours of morning with security forces launching major offensive. The encounter continued till afternoon resulting in the killing of both the militants after house was blasted off by the security forces using heavy weaponry. After searching the debris, bodies of both the militants were recovered and weapons were seized. Mr Razak said that Ahsan Bhai alias Mamoo was from Pakistan and Javaid Ahmad Nengroo alias Umair son of Farooq Ahmad Nengroo hailed from Rajpora, Pulwama. Ahsan was active in the Kashmir valley for last 11 years and was operating as divisional commander of JeM outfit for South Kashmir. He was one of the most wanted militants in South Kashmir. His killing is a major setback to the JeM. The duo was involved in a number of militancy related incidents. Ahsan Bhai was instrumental in recruiting local youth and had carried out many attacks on Police and security forces camps, which included the one at Inder-Pulwama during which an Army Captain was killed, while Javaid Nengroo was involved in an attack on Police Station Rajpora, Razak said. Arms and ammunition was also recovered from the possession of these two militants, which included 2-AK 47 rifles, 6-AK magazines and 60 rounds of AK-ammunition.
