Srinagar: Two Jash-e-Mohammad militants including a top commander were killed in fierce firefight with troops in South Kashmir’s Shopian district while body of a Lashkar militant was recovered from the debris of an encounter site at Handwara in Kupwara district on Thusday. Police sources said police and 44 Rashtriya Rifles personnel launched a joint combing and search operation at Khan Mohalla, Keller in Shopian district this afternoon. “The troops spotted two militants and asked to surrender and lay down weapons. They, however, turned down the offer and took refuge in a house and fired from automatic weapons towards the search party. The fire was returned by the troops, triggering an encounter”. They said during the initial gunfight a JeM militant identified as Mohammad Imran was killed. “His colleague continued to fire on the troops. The gunfight ended this evening after the killing of second militant,” they said. They said two houses were damaged during the fierce gunfight. Defence spokesman Col J S Brar confirmed the death of two militants in the Shopian gun fight. He identified the deceased militants as JeM divisional commander Qari Zubair and his associate Mohammad Imran Khan. “Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site,” he said. Meanwhile, police and army recovered body of another Lashkar militant from the debris at Shatigam Ganai Mohalla village, raising the number of militants killed in the firefight yesterday to two. “Body of the unidentified LeT militant was recovered from the debris of one of the four residential houses gutted during the encounter yesterday,” police sources said. Police and Rashtriya Rifles had launched a joint operation in the village on Tuesday evening and came under fire from the hiding militants, triggering a gunfight which ended yesterday. Four houses and a cowshed were destroyed in the encounter and later the search of the debris led to recovery of the body of a LeT militant and some arms and ammunition.
