EU Delegation Meets Omar, Discusses Matters Related To J&K13 May 2011

Srinagar: European Union delegation led by Ambassador of EU Daniele Smadja met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and discussed socio-economic and political developments in the state. 'In an hour-long interaction with the Chief Minister, the delegation discussed matters relating to the socio-economic and political developments in Jammu and Kashmir,' an official spokesman said after the meeting last evening. Omar apprised the EU Troika delegation of the steps being taken by the union and state Governments to restore permanent peace and bring political stability in the state, he said. The other members of the delegation included Ambassador of Ireland Kenneth Thompson, Ambassador of Belgium Pierre Vaesan, First Secretary EU delegation Philipp Gross and Attache EU delegation Anne Vaugier-Chatterjee. Omar briefed the delegation about the measures taken by the state government to ensure equitable and all round development in Jammu and Kashmir with special reference to the backward and remote areas. He also talked about the new initiatives introduced by his Government for skills development and enhancing employability of youth and economic measures put in place to give impetus to the process of growth and development in the State. The Chief Minister mentioned government efforts in the sectors of power, education, health care, road communication, water supply, agriculture, horticulture, industries and tourism. The two sides also discussed in detail the harnessing of state's rich hydro electric potential and bio-diversity for economic gains and welfare of the state. The Chief Minister detailed the measures put in place for the infrastructure development in tourism sector and apprised them of the initiatives taken to diversify the tourism sector showcasing new areas of interest including adventure, sports and pilgrim tourism.
