Srinagar: Jaish-e-Mohammad’s chief commander for Jammu and Kashmir Sajjad Afghani was today shot dead with his bodyguard in a brief encounter on the banks of Dal Lake, police said. Kashmir police chief Shiv Murari Sahai said Afghani had conducted a reconnaissance of Srinagar’s Lal Chowk shortly before he was killed. “Earlier in the day, they conducted the recce of Lal Chowk…. They were here (Srinagar) to create disturbances... there was a possibility of some major strike,” he said. Two policemen and a woman passing by were injured. Protests broke out in the area soon after, with pro-freedom activists accusing the police of faking the encounter. However, Sahai termed the encounter a huge breakthrough for the force. Afghani, an A-category militant, was involved in many attacks including one at Pattan last year in which two CRPF men were killed, the police said. Sahai said they have recovered documents from Afghani’s possession that could help investigate his role in terror strikes.
