Shootouts In Sopore, 2 Hurt

Sopore: Two persons were injured in two separate shoot-out incidents in Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday. Unknown gunmen fired from point blank range towards a poultry dealer, Majid Bashir Khan, 35, son of Bashir Ahmad Khan of Badambagh Sopore at Chota Bazaar, Sopore in the morning. He sustained bullet injuries in the leg and was rushed to Sub District Hospital, Sopore, where from doctors referred him to Bones and Joints hospital Srinagar for specialized treatment.The doctors attending on him in the hospital termed his condition as stable. The second incident took place at 4 pm when unidentified gunmen fired towards a youth identified as Mohammad Arif of Watlab at a cigarette shop in Sopore market. Eye witnesses said the youth was having a tea in a local tea stall when gunmen fired on him. “He received bullet injuries in the leg and was shifted to Bone and Joints Hospital Srinagar,” they said. Arif was an employee at Public Health Engineering Department. The firing incidents caused panic in the apple town with people running helter skelter and shopkeepers pulling down shutters of their shops and running for cover. A police official said the attacks were carried out by militants. “A manhunt has been launched to track them down. We are conducting raids at their suspected hide-outs. So far no arrests have been made,” he said. However, no militant group has owned the responsibility of the attacks. The Sopore township has witnessed surge in militancy related incidents in February after January 2011 remained relatively calm. Today’s firing incident was the 4th violent related incident in the township in recent past. Earlier, two teenage sisters were killed by unknown gunmen last week followed by grenade attack on the residence of senior Congress leader Ghulam Rasool Kar. RK News adds from Jammu: A youth was injured in a landmine blast near the Indo-Pak border in Samba district of Jammu, officials said. They said Krishen Kumar was injured when he stepped over the mine resulting in an explosion near the International Border in Suchetpur village in Samba district. He has been hospitalized.
